Decsrition of Census Events in GEDCOM & interace with FTA Colour Census Report

Oct 18, 2013 at 4:22 AM
The following is not a problem with FTA, which certainly appears to be a very valuable tool, but the result of my inconsistency in recording census event. However, any help would be much appreciated!

In my family history programme (Family Historian v5.0.9), I have created specific census events rather than use the GEDCOM CENS standard event. As such I have named them "Census 1911", "Census 1901 (31 Mar)", "Census 1891 (5 Apr)", and so on. These are the event names, not their labels.

On testing the Colour Census Report in FTA, I was expecting that all these events would have been ignored, as FTA uses CENS and RESI to determine whether the correct information is available, however, I find that FTA recognizes that I have entered census information for the 1911 Census, but not the others. Having checked, this is not because I have also added RESI events for the individuals concerned.

With my limited understanding of programming, I am wondering whether this could be something to do with the way I have named the events, as "Census 1911" does not have any additional detail in parentheses. If this is the case, how is it that FTA recognizes my custom event, and does this mean it would be possible for me to amend earlier event names and have them recognized too?

None of the above is anything I consider an urgent issue, but have explored in more depth than I previously had time to do, it is an interesting issue that I would like to resolve and learn from for future reference!

In the meantime, many thanks to the creators for making this programme available, especially as a free utility.

Hi there,

It depends on how the data is presented in the GEDCOM file. There is support for custom tags called Census yyyy (where yyyy is a census year). A GEDCOM snippet showing some people with the tags would help.

If this is the case then yes amending the event names to remove the brackets (perhaps putting the info in the description?) would indeed mean that they are identified by FT Analyzer. Probably the best approach is to make a backup of your file and work on a copy to see if that works, if it does great if not you've got your backup.

Note that on loading it should tell you how many census events it detected.

Hi Levva,

Thanks for your response and explanation. The problem has now been solved by using a FH plugin to convert all the census events to CENS, and of course FTA picks up all the corrected information without any problem.

I have inserted an extract from my pre-converted Gedcom file below for your information. I am sure that it was the parentheses that caused the problem.

Andy

Good to hear you got it working. From looking at your GEDCOM snippet I can say that it would also have worked if you'd remove the parentheses.
